Paper Dought / Leku Leter

“Leku Leter – Paper Dought Playing Cards” is a new collection created by tfortit, inspired by the history of the Albanian currency. This collection seeks to highlight the figures and events that have marked different historical periods of Albania’s monetary heritage, from the time of the Kingdom, through the communist era, and into the years of democracy.

The origin of the name “Lek”

The central figure of this collection is Lekë Dukagjini, since according to the official documents of the Albanian Parliament, the name of the national currency derives from him. However, there is also a longstanding and vivid debate, as many associate the name with Alexander the Great (known in Albanian as Leka i Madh), who for centuries has been a symbol of power and greatness in Albanian popular imagination. This duality in origin makes the “Lek” even more intriguing, both historically and culturally.

Historical periods

  • The Kingdom (1926–1939): The Lek was first introduced during the reign of King Ahmet Zogu, becoming the first national currency after the declaration of independence. This represented a major step toward the consolidation of the Albanian state.
  • The Communist Era (1945–1990): Banknotes and coins of this period reflected socialist ideology, featuring workers, peasants, and heroes of the National Liberation War. The Lek became a symbol of a closed and centralized economy.
  • The Democratic Period (1991–present): With the great political and social transformations, Albanian banknotes were redesigned multiple times, featuring important personalities of national history and culture, as well as artistic elements that reflect the country’s rich cultural heritage.

The meaning of the title

The title “Leku Leter” carries a play on words that connects both the history of Albanian currency and modern expression. “Leter” refers directly to banknotes, while “Paper Dought” – a slang expression in English for money – adds a contemporary and universal touch.

Sources and documentation

To create this collection, extensive archives from the Bank of Albania were consulted, along with insights from experienced coin collectors. This careful research process has ensured that the collection is not only a set of playing cards, but also an educational journey through the history of the Lek and the story of Albania itself.

Materials and Production

The cards are produced in standard poker size, ensuring familiarity and comfort for players and collectors alike. They are made from German black paper, 320 gsm, which provides durability, premium texture, and a professional feel.

The packaging is crafted with hot foil stamping and embossing, giving the collection a refined and elegant finish.
